Pertinent Legislation - H.R. 3614 Bill - Menstrual Equity for All Act of 2021

Sponsored by Representative Grace Meng, the Menstrual Equity for All Act of 2021 proposes accommodations to provide menstrual products for students at elementary and secondary schools, students at institutions of higher education, incarcerated and detained individuals, homeless individuals, and employees. This legislation, with the objective of destigmatizing period poverty, essentially aims to increase the accessibility and affordability of menstrual products for those in need. Some striking statistics that were included in the bill to support its primary cause were as follows: 1) More than half of the population of the United States will likely menstruate monthly for the rest of their lives; 2) According to recent studies, 1 in 4 females reports difficulty in affording period products; 3) 1 in 10 college students in the United States are adversely impacted by period poverty. These statistics emphasize the imminent importance of initiatives and, ultimately, legislation geared toward alleviating period poverty and assuring women’s menstrual health. With initiatives such as The Elea Project, hopefully, pertinent legislations such as the Menstrual Equity for All Act of 2021 will continue to arise to destigmatize and put an end to period poverty among women and girls of all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses, alike.
