EU Intervention: Panel discussion on Menstrual Hygiene Management, Human Rights, and Gender Equality

On June 21, 2022, a press release regarding the panel discussion consisting of delegates of member-nations of the EU (European Union). Inspired by the deep concern of the EU regarding harmful gender stereotypes, stigma, and discriminatory practices surrounding menstruation within societies. Marginalization and violence are inherent risks resulting from misinformation and taboos surrounding menstruation, which reinforce discrimination.

The primary objective of the EU panel event was to overarchingly enhance the involvement and knowledge of men in the realms of gender equality and menstrual health. Economic barriers remain persistent as evidenced by the skyrocketing price of menstrual products; however, EU member states seek to combat this stringent barrier through the development of cost-friendly, accessible period products in public settings.

The fundamental right to menstrual hygiene is intricately intertwined with the rights to clean water, hygiene, and sanitation facilities. As such, the EU panel discussion on menstrual hygiene management seeks, at the core of its mission, to maintain this pressing issue on the global agenda and to ensure they are addressed appropriately, especially in circumstances of conflict-affected areas and humanitarian endeavors, ranging from regional to international scales.
