Free Period Products in University of Georgia Bathrooms

After a brief hiatus, we are back at it here at The Elea Project.

As a fellow Georgian, it has been of essential importance to me to follow numerous Georgia organizations, which strive for menstrual equality, destigmatize menstruation, and educate others about this crucial topic that, in actuality, impacts nearly half the population worldwide. One, which truly managed to capture my attention, was Project Red, an organization that has made significant strides in menstrual equity in our community.
I recently read an article in“The Black and Red” newspaper (student newspaper at UGA) entitled “Project Red brings free period products to UGA bathrooms.” These products were all provided free-of-charge to UGA students in two all-gendered restrooms across campus. In fact, provided products have been sustainably made and consist of both tampons and pads.

To give some background context, Project Red at UGA is a student-led organization with roughly 100 members who ardently advocate to end period poverty. How, exactly, were they able to make period products freely available in all campus bathrooms? Funding.

Specifically, Project Red received $4,000 in funding from UGA’s Office of Sustainability and additional support from the Facilities Management Division at UGA to bring period product dispensers to campus.

Closely aligned with the goals of The Elea Project, Project Red hopes to present numbers of how many products were used to UGA’s administration to hopefully expand the program and make menstrual products more widely available on campus.
